Corncrake

A visitor was shy, the corncrake nests in the grasslands now more peaceful north and west Rural – driven from its former range increasingly mechanized agriculture.

The warm summer evenings at the turn of the century, monotonous, grating Crek Crek people from the countryside elusive, though many of these birds. Many visitors arrive shy of Africa to their residence Summer dense stands of herbaceous vegetation and rough throughout Great Britain. But over the past 70 years the corncrake has slowly and dramatically disappeared from most of its breeding haunts, and is only now heard regularly in the west of Scotland, Islands of Scotland, north-west Wales and, especially, in rural Ireland, where nearly 1,500 pairs still nest each year.

Despite its name, the Corncrake prefers meadows with lots of nettles and other tall grasses, fields of ripe wheat. Here, he spends most of the day o'er the vegetation, perfectly camouflaged by its brown, black-streaked plumage. About the size of a moorhen and resembles a thin, short neck Gamebird, it is, like other members of the family of rail, the more often heard than seen. Shy and quiet by nature, the rattle Crake cranes his neck above the stems of grass to reconnoitre before emerging from the cover. In approaching, it disappears quickly, creeping sneak a patch of cover to another. Only as a last resort should we air to escape danger, that his brilliant stains brown wings and legs dangling behind his short tail, clearly identify the bird. Under cover of the light failing, if, at dusk, he became bolder and more active research in the grass for the beetles, grasshoppers, slugs, snails, worms dirt, leaves and seeds.

Night Cryer – It is the male corncrake which is responsible for the extreme accountant, grating call. He uses to announce his claim of territory – all night for weeks on end in the same area. The sound quality is a particularly ventriloquist, which makes this elusive bird even more difficult to locate.

However, a way to lure is to imitate his call by rubbing a wooden ruler in the teeth of a comb, a male caller was often difficult to resist investigating what it takes to be a rival.

If two males rivals do meet, they puff out their feathers for the body, opening their wings to show their big brown spots and stretch head and neck to the other. If is very angry, they can hit with their short, sharp, good roses.

The corncrake nests is a poor shallow, when the mode Women with a carpet of dry grass sparse. It is generally well hidden in the lush grass or hay between cultures. The female lays 6-14 eggs and incubates them for a fortnight. Three or four days after hatching, downy black chicks are able to leave the nest Food and find for themselves. After 4 or 5 weeks, they can fly, and in September went with the adults in their migration to the South Ward in the Mediterranean and the Sahara to the grasslands of East Africa. Although seemingly small in flight, they are able to travel 4,000 miles to their winter quarters.
